Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are shrubs with bright flowers that bloom in late summer and autumn and are easy to grow in our climate zone. The hydrangea genus includes 35 species that are native to East Asia, North and South America. Most hydrangeas are shrubs, but there are also tree-like species.

Hydrangea Properties

It is not soil-hungry, but grows best in loamy, humusy, moist, acidic soil and prefers shade. When properly sited and planted in the right soil, hydrangeas are decorative and delight with their flowers. Hydrangeas are often susceptible to fungal diseases and pests under unfavourable growing conditions.

Shades of hydrangea flowers

When we hear the name hydrangea, we think of a shrub with white flowers. But they are far more than just white flowers. In addition to white and greenish flowers, they can have pink, red and lilac flowers. It is an exceptional plant because it is able to change the colour of the inflorescence during flowering. It can first bloom greenish, then white and finally turn red! This is also the case with the whorled hydrangea, which has greenish inflorescences at the beginning of the flowering period and then turns greenish-pink later. “Rensam hydrangeas start out white, then the edges of the flowers turn pink, and by the end of the bloom the flowers turn a bright raspberry colour.

Hydrangeas in Lithuania

Hydrangeas that are cold hardy and can survive the winter are the most suitable for the Lithuanian climate. The following four species best meet these criteria:

  • Hydrangea paniculata (Hydrangea paniculata)
  • Hydrangea arborescens (Hydrangea arborescens)
  • Climbing Hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris)
  • Hydrangea macrophylla (Hydrangea macrophylla)

The easiest hydrangeas to look after are the panicle hydrangea and the light hydrangea, which can withstand winters and are frost hardy.

Hydrangeas are bright and expressive flowers that look great in a bouquet. Hydrangeas can often be seen in Flowers & Lovers flower arrangements. They are also very suitable for mono bouquets of hydrangea flowers. A hydrangea bouquet makes a beautiful interior decoration and is the perfect gift for the season. You can find hydrangea bouquets and other bouquets in our online shop.

Hydrangea care

Hydrangeas need regular watering and fertilisation to keep them growing vigorously. In spring, when the leaves burst, they are fertilised with mineral fertiliser. When the flower buds appear, they are fertilised again. When growing large-leaved hydrangeas and in order to preserve the blue colour of the flowers, a special fertiliser for hydrangeas is used. Hydrangeas are pruned in early spring, when they are not yet in active growth: diseased and weak branches are removed and some are shortened to give the crown a certain shape. In autumn, dead inflorescences are cut back.
