While a good flower arrangement is very pleasing to the eye, it is equally important to consider where the bouquet will be kept. A vase, like a bouquet, can be customised to suit an emotional state, an occasion or the colour notes of a room. When the life of the bouquet is over, the vase becomes an interior detail and, like every object in the house, creates the mood of the room.
History
The first vases that were discovered were not decorative, but were used to hold food, especially oil and oats. Because of their oval design, it is assumed that they were made in a pottery wheel. The first vase made in a potter’s wheel was found in Mesopotamia around 3000 BC.
The idea of giving vases a decorative touch originated in Ancient Greece, where Greek mythological creatures and scenes from mythology were painted on vases, making them not only functional but also beautiful. The Greeks called vases by different names depending on their purpose. “Amphorae were used for storing food, oil and wine, hydria for water, alabastra for oil and perfume and kraters for mixing wine and water. The shape of the vases also depended on the purpose for which they were intended. The vase was even used as the first trophy, and in ancient Greece the winner of the Olympic Games received an amphora (from which modern vases evolved) filled with the sacred olive oil. The Greeks were the first to give vases a symbolic meaning.
Nowadays, vases are sometimes the only proof that a culture exists.
Current vases
Today, vases are used to hold cut flowers and as a decorative element.
Vases are made from a variety of materials: wood, ceramics, glass and metal. They usually have a similar shape, widening from bottom to top, then narrowing, forming a “neck” and then widening slightly again, but due to the influence of contemporary art trends, unconventional shapes can be found. Vases are sometimes seen used to hold water with the intention of pouring it into glasses and drinking it, again expanding the functions of the vases slightly.
Whatever the purpose of the vase, it’s important to choose a vase that suits your décor or personality, so that its beauty catches the eye of its owners and guests.
