The name comes from Greek: <em>chrysos<\/em> means gold and <em>anthemon<\/em> means flower, because the first cultivated chrysanthemums were yellow. They come from China, where they have been grown for more than 2,500 years, and only reached Europe in the 17th\u201318th centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this guide: what chrysanthemums symbolise in Lithuania and Asia, which types are used in bouquets and how to care for them so they last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What chrysanthemums symbolise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meaning of chrysanthemums depends a lot on the country:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>In Lithuania and most of Europe<\/strong> chrysanthemums are associated with autumn and remembrance: potted chrysanthemums are the most common flowers on graves on All Souls\u2019 Day (V\u0117lin\u0117s). Yet a bouquet of cut chrysanthemums is a perfectly ordinary, festive gift.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>In China<\/strong> the chrysanthemum is one of the \u201cFour Gentlemen\u201d plants, together with the plum blossom, orchid and bamboo. It symbolises longevity and nobility.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>In Japan<\/strong> the chrysanthemum is the emperor\u2019s symbol: a sixteen-petalled chrysanthemum adorns the imperial seal, and the Order of the Chrysanthemum is the country\u2019s highest honour.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>In Australia<\/strong> chrysanthemums are the traditional Mother\u2019s Day flower.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colour adds further nuance: white chrysanthemums mean purity and respect, yellow ones joy and friendship, red ones love, pink ones tenderness and purple ones good wishes. In France, Belgium or Italy white chrysanthemums are seen as mourning flowers, so when giving flowers to people from those countries choose a mixed or colourful bouquet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of cut chrysanthemums<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hundreds of chrysanthemum varieties are grown for bouquets. Florists usually group them by flower size and shape:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Spray chrysanthemums<\/strong> \u2013 5\u201310 medium-sized flowers on one stem. The most versatile, often seen in mixed bouquets.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Santini<\/strong> \u2013 small-flowered spray chrysanthemums with many tiny flowers resembling daisies or buttons. They fill a bouquet nicely and last especially long.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Large-flowered (disbud)<\/strong> \u2013 a single large flower, 10\u201315 cm across or more, on each stem. They include spider chrysanthemums with long tubular petals.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Pompon and ball chrysanthemums<\/strong> \u2013 dense, round flowers, such as green pompon or pink Momoko chrysanthemums.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Momoko chrysanthemums<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Momoko is a ball-type chrysanthemum variety with pink, almost fluffy flowers. The name is Japanese: <em>momo<\/em> means peach. To keep them looking good for longer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>choose a plant with some buds still closed \u2013 it will flower for longer;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>water it well before taking it out, and remove the plastic sleeve on site \u2013 moisture collects underneath and the flowers rot;<\/li>\n\n\n<li>chrysanthemums tolerate light frosts, but in hard frost the flowers get damaged \u2013 that is natural in late autumn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are chrysanthemums poisonous<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ornamental chrysanthemums are not edible. Their sap can irritate the skin of some people, and in cats and dogs that eat leaves or flowers they can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and drooling. Keep the bouquet out of pets\u2019 reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to combine chrysanthemums with<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chrysanthemums go beautifully with <a href=\"https:\/\/flowersandlovers.lt\/en\/eustoma\/\">lisianthus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/flowersandlovers.lt\/en\/carnations\/\">carnations<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/flowersandlovers.lt\/en\/guboya\/\">gypsophila<\/a> and eucalyptus.
