That is why they are also called African daisies: gerberas come from South Africa and belong to the same aster family as daisies. The genus is named after the German botanist Traugott Gerber, and today mostly hybrids are grown for cut bouquets and pots, in colours ranging from white to deep burgundy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gerberas usually last 7\u201314 days in a vase, but only when cared for properly \u2013 their stems are more sensitive than those of many other flowers. Below: what gerbera colours mean, how to care for cut gerberas so the stems don\u2019t droop, and how to grow a gerbera in a pot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What gerbera colours mean<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, gerberas symbolise joy, sincerity and good spirits \u2013 one of the best flowers when you want to cheer someone up without grand gestures. The colour adds more precise meaning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Red<\/strong> \u2013 love, passion and complete devotion.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Pink<\/strong> \u2013 tenderness, admiration and gratitude.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Yellow<\/strong> \u2013 friendship, joy and optimism.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Orange<\/strong> \u2013 energy, enthusiasm and warmth.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>White<\/strong> \u2013 purity and innocence; they suit christenings and light-hearted celebrations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because they are so bright, gerberas are often given for birthdays, to colleagues, to children or simply for no reason at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gerbera types and flower shapes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two groups are most common in floristry: <strong>standard gerberas<\/strong> with a flower 10\u201313 cm across and <strong>mini gerberas<\/strong> (also called germini) with a 6\u20138 cm flower. Mini gerberas suit smaller, playful bouquets, while standard ones suit single-variety bouquets or tall arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By flower shape, gerberas can be single (one row of petals), semi-double and double, as well as \u201cspider\u201d types with narrow, pointed petals. The centre can be light, greenish or dark \u2013 which changes the mood of the whole bouquet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to care for cut gerberas so the stems don\u2019t droop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common gerbera problem is a drooping head. This happens when bacteria clog the stem and water no longer reaches the flower. Gerbera stems are hairy, so they rot faster in deep water. To make gerberas last longer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Use only a little water<\/strong> \u2013 5\u20137 cm at the bottom of the vase is enough. The stems should not be submerged deeply.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Cut the stems at an angle<\/strong>, 2\u20133 cm, with a sharp knife and put them in water straight away.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Use a clean vase<\/strong> and flower food \u2013 it slows the growth of bacteria.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Change the water every day or two<\/strong>, trimming the stems by 1 cm each time.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Choose a vase that supports the stems<\/strong>: one with a narrow neck or a taller one, so the heavy flowers do not bend.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Keep them cool<\/strong>, away from radiators and direct sun.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a gerbera has already drooped, cut 3\u20134 cm off the stem and stand it in warm water for a couple of hours \u2013 the flower often straightens up again. It likes a bright, well-ventilated spot, but not scorching heat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Temperature.<\/strong> 20\u201324 \u00b0C in summer, cooler in winter \u2013 14\u201316 \u00b0C (no lower than 12 \u00b0C) \u2013 with extra light.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Watering.<\/strong> The soil should be slightly moist but not wet. Water with room-temperature water at soil level, so water does not get into the leaf rosette.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Humidity.<\/strong> Gerberas like humid air but not misting \u2013 it is better to stand the pot on a tray of damp expanded clay.<\/li>\n\n\n<li><strong>Flowering.<\/strong> Twist off faded flowers right at the base so the plant produces new ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What gerberas pair with in a bouquet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gerberas are a bold accent, so they look best with more serious greenery: eucalyptus, monstera or palm leaves.
